Volunteer Opportunities
Currently, the CrossWire Bible Society has a number of projects in progress, all open to new volunteers. Most of our projects do require some level of technical expertise, but a few do not. Consider writing to support@crosswire.org if you are considering assisting in one of these projects and would like additional information or help getting started.
The SWORD Project
The SWORD Project is CrossWire's original project to produce a free, open-source, cross-platform Bible software engine: the SWORD API. This project is at the heart of many other CrossWire projects that depend upon it. Visit our developers' wiki for more information about helping the SWORD Project.
The SWORD Project eText Library
We are always looking to expand our existing library of eTexts in SWORD's module format. You can learn more about creating SWORD modules by reading our module making documentation.
Christian Classics Ethereal Library
While we have no official relationship with the Christian Classics Ethereal Library (CCEL), we do consider their work to be of vital importance to the continued growth of our own eText library. CCEL facilitates the transcription of public domain texts into an electronic format that is easily utilized by the SWORD Project. We especially suggest volunteers without other technical expertise consider contributing to CCEL's work through their digital facsimile edition transcription and markup efforts. If you can read and type, you can help.
SWORD Ports and Frontends
We always seek to bring SWORD to new platforms and update our current frontends. It is part of our philosophy that users should be able to study the Bible without having to make compromises. That includes not having to compromise by using a platform other than their favorite.
Tesseract work
The University of Muenster, Westphalen, Germany is looking to collaborate with us on the reverse engineering of the lost data used to print (on a dot-matrix printer, mind you!) Kurt Aland's work in Text und Textwert. We have a pdf containing scans of a small chunk of the printout and have started a tesseract training file for the greek font.
We would be excited to turn this project over to someone else who is keen on this work and has the time to do an excellent job. Some tesseract training files and scripts exist already. A sample page :Download here
